I am a Christmas fanatic, so I don’t know about you, but I have definitely already started playing Christmas songs during my daily commute home (don’t judge me!). It gave me the great idea to share the myriad of genres I have on my playlist for those of you who might need to change up the way you get into the holiday spirit.
Let’s just get this out of the way upfront: Yes, I do actually have all of these on my iPhone; Yes, I like a wide range of music and no, my husband won’t let me play these in the house yet or put up my tree – but on December first, Christmas is coming to the house for sure!
So if nothing else, hopefully you get a chuckle that some of these even exist! Without further ado…
For the Hipsters out there:
Weezer – The Christmas Song
She & Him (that’s Zooey Deschanel on vocals) -Little Saint Nick
Matt Dusk ft. Hawksley Workman – Peace on Earth
For more traditional tastes:
Bing Crosby and David Bowie – Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth
Josh Groban – Ave Maria (Hey, it’s good enough for Oprah)
Judy Garland – Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Retro Awesomeness (From my favourite decade, the 80’s):
Band-Aid – Do They Know it’s Christmas?
Prince – Another Lonely Christmas (kind of a bummer, but still Prince so, therefore awesome)
Wham! – Last Christmas (an absolute must!)
Diva-licious Options:
Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas is You (of course!)
Jessica Simpson – Let it Snow!
Spice Girls – Christmas Wrapping (they are divas in my book!… Girl Power forever!)
A Little Canadiana:
Barenaked Ladies – God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman/We three Kings (Bonus: this version also features Sarah McLaughlin!)
Bryan Adams – Christmas Time
Bob & Doug McKenzie – 12 Days of Christmas
For the Soft-Rockers:
Rob Thomas – A New York Christmas
Bon Jovi – Please Come Home for Christmas
Jimmy Buffett – Jingle Bells
Did you know Run DMC has more than one Christmas Rap?
Run DMC – Christmas in Hollis
Run DMC – Christmas Is
Country Bumpkins will enjoy:
Carrie Underwood – Oh Holy Night
Reba McEntire – I’ll Be Home for Christmas
The Chimpunks ft. Patti Loveless – Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (Yup, I went there.)
Because really, it’s a happy holiday – some of my ultimate favourites to make you smile and want to dance!
Boney M. – Mary’s Boy Child/Oh My Lord (bonus smiles if you watch this EPIC video)
Jackson 5 – Drummer Boy
Stevie Wonder – Someday At Christmas
And of course, for those of you celebrating Chanukkah, there is always these classics!:
Adam Sandler – Channukkah Song 1
Adam Sandler – Channukkah Song 2
Adam Sandler – Channukkah Song 3
And to finish off the list, I will also offer you this piece of sage wisdom…
If you’re like me, and loved the movie Grease, you may have been excited last year when Olivia Newton John and John Travolta announced that they would be collaborating on a Christmas album.
The magic of Grease was not recreated.
I would not recommend it. But, I can tolerate it. You just have to prepare yourself for some cheezy banter and sound effects.
What are some of your favourites?
