Cristina Domínguez Lucas y Fernando Hernández-Gil
Cristina Domínguez Lucas y Fernando Hernández-Gil are the brains and design talent behind the successful and multidisciplinary Spanish design studio Lucas and Hernández-Gil. Since 2007, Lucas y Hernández-Gil have set the bar very high for the Spanish design scene and little by little, are obtaining a well deserved relevance with an international presence for their architecture, their interiors and their wonderful graphics.
Their work is memorable, with a resonance between the inhabitants and their spaces. Their spaces have wonderful natural light as an intial rule, breathing space to stop and rest the eyes, and spaces that become contemplative as well functional never loosing personality. Their spaces are a canvas for their art selections. Bright colours become manageable and more vibrant with an exquisite selection of lighting fixtures and furnishings. Some sort of contemporary domestic chapels.
Their approach to design is well directed, in a minimalist way that is always warm and inviting. Just the necessary, no more, no less, every aspect of their projects gets perfectly curated to convey their design philosophy without knowing them.
Without any further introduction, here is our conversation with Cristina y Fernando:
Iván Meade – What was your first experience with design?
Lucas y Hernández-Gil – Our first job was a family home in a little town in Segovia, Spain.

Iván Meade – Why did you feel the need to run a multidisciplinary design studio?
Lucas y Hernández-Gil – On one hand, we had the need to take advantage of the opportunity to design the different elements of each project, and on the other, to ensure that the end result is coherent and strong, while sharing the same initial vision.

Iván Meade – What would you say you look for in your creative team?
Lucas y Hernández-Gil – That they are involved and exceed in everything they do.

Iván Meade – How would you describe your design style?
Lucas y Hernández- Gil – Rather than a precise style, we approach every one of our projects with character. A mix of curiosity, intuition and professionalism. We see an opportunity in every job. For us, it is important to use clean lines, with interesting environments to create harmonious spaces.

Iván Meade – Many of our readers are design students – What would be the best advice you can give to someone who is starting a career in design?
Lucas y Hernández-Gil – To see, to see and to see. Always training the eye with open eyes at all times. It is always part of the foundation to apply yourself in learning the basics at school, and learning the challenges in the job. You never stop learning. A good knowledge base never ends.

Lucas y Hernández-Gil – We believe our passion, commitment and professionalism applies to our work. We always try to create spaces that are warm and harmonious.

Iván Meade – How do you conceive your interiors – what is important for you in order to have a successful interior design?
Lucas y Hernández-Gil – From the architectural point of view, our priority is the distribution, the adequate use of materials, and the light.

Iván Meade – What is important to achieve a successful interior?
Lucas y Hernández-Gil – First of all is to gain the trust of the client and secondly to work with the perfect balance between functionality and beauty.

Iván Meade – Fernando, it looks like you are surrounded by ladies at the studio – What is your favourite aspect about this?
Fernando – The fact that the team is mostly feminine was by chance, it was not the planned strategy for the studio. The profile of people that we look for to work in the studio are people who exude sensibility and take care of every aspect of what they do.
